Buying a used car: check the title before you pay

Ask to see the title. The seller's name on the title should match the person or dealer selling the car.

Look for brands on the title. Words like "salvage" or "rebuilt" change what the car is worth. If you see one, ask why.

Check the VIN in two places. The vehicle identification number on the title should match the one on the car itself, usually at the base of the windshield and on the driver's door frame.

Read the state's own rules. Ohio publishes how title transfers work on its own state websites. Check there for the current steps rather than relying on a summary.
